On October 31 2020 NVAS organised a panel on the effect of Covid-19 on the African continent. We had the pleasure to hear from five speakers from different countries in Africa. They spoke about how the coronavirus has affected their personal and professional lives, and how their governments dealt with battling the virus. You can re-watch their presentations here.
Samuel Ntewusu is a social historian who holds an MPhil in African Studies from the University of Ghana and a PhD from Leiden University (2012) with a socio-historical study of northern traders and transporters in Accra’s Tudu, 1908-2008. Since 2011 Ntewusu has worked at the Institute of African Studies, University of Ghana. He is also the co- coordinator of the ASCL research programme Society and Change in Northern Ghana: Dagomba, Gonja, and the Regional Perspective on Ghanaian History.
I was born into an Afrikaans middle-class family with a long Dutch name: Petronella Jacoba Jacobs. My mother decided to call me Kobie, so thankful for that!I teach drama. I started my professional teaching career in 2007 at a rural school At present, I am at a city school, The Settlers High School.
Setargew Kenaw is an associate professor of philosophy and cultural anthropology at Addis Ababa University. He has published two books, a considerable number of journal articles, and book chapters. His research interests include epistemology, existentialism, and classical Ethiopian philosophy.
Mariama Mary Fall (Senegal) is in the process of finishing her PhD dissertation on youth, employment and education in Niger at the University of Ottawa. To her, it is urgent to work towards quality education, beyond enrolment rates. Beyond basic literacy and classic schooling, she focuses on youth lifelong learning and skills to ease their school-to-work transition, which should lead to healthier economies and communities.
Abdallah Ally lives in Mwanza Buhongwa and recently obtained his diploma in clinical medicine at the Sengerema Health Institute in Sengerema, Tanzania. At the moment he is looking for a job and would prefer to work as a doctor. His mothertongue is Swahili, his mother is Haya and his father is Zaramo.
It is our pleasure to invite you to the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of NVAS members to be held online on Saturday 31 October at 14:00. After the AGM there will be a panel about the impact of Covid-19 on the African continent. Speakers from Ghana, South Africa, Ethiopia, Senegal, and Tanzania will briefly share their experiences with the virus and the impact of their personal and professional lives. Biologist Henk Breman travelled to Mali in 1972 to avoid military service. He arrived during one of the longest droughts on the continent – triggering him to conduct research on the caring capacity of natural resources in Africa. Since then, he obtained over 40 years of experience in 27 African countries. His most recent publication, ‘From fed by the world to food security: Accelerating agricultural development in Africa’, is a plea to policymakers in Africa and beyond to invest in agricultural development. According to Henk, it is the only way to reach socio-economic development. NVAS visited him in his countryside house, surrounded by lush greenery, to discuss his book and the future of agricultural development in Africa.
The Africa Studies Centre in Leiden has a new Press and Communications Officer: Rik Jongenelen. Rik is succeeding Marieke van Winden and his new role includes to manage the NVAS membership.

Rik Jongenelen holds a BA in Education (2016) and an MA in African Studies (2018) from Leiden University. Being a teacher he has been involved in active learning programmes in Uganda and Malawi as a programme supervisor and peer coach. His fieldwork for the MA took place in Zambia, in which he explored the potential of role models in disability advocacy. Rik’s primary research interest lies in education, but also in a wide range of topics related to inclusive development, disability, history and politics. His region of interest is mostly the Sahel, but also Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Currently he works at the African Studies Centre as a Communications and Press Officer.

Gezongen door Elaine da Silva. Wat een afscheidscadeau! Je mag het zelf organiseren. Uitverkocht en een wachtlijst. Een voor velen onbekend maar verrassend mooi programma. Iedere artiest en spreker met een eigen, bijzonder verhaal. Dansende Helden-jongeren, en waarschijnlijk meer dan twintig verschillende nationaliteiten in de zaal. Ook de presentator van de middag Angélique Mbundu, van Congolese (DRC) afkomst, met een duidelijke boodschap: mede-oprichter van de African Young Professional Network (AYP) die jonge Afrikaanse professionels in Nederland een stem en een gezicht willen geven (http://www.aypnetwork.nl/nl/organisatie/voormalige-bestuursleden/bestuursleden-2015/bestuurslid-angelique).
Wat maakte een bijzondere indruk? Cultuurjournalist Jair Tchong? Een indrukwekkend cv op Linkedin. Een grote kennis van de (West-) Afrikaanse muziek. Een waterval van informatie. Teveel om bij te houden. Gelukkig schrijft hij op zijn eigen website over zijn optreden. Zie https://jairtchong.wordpress.com/. En wat blijkt : zijn liefde voor de Malinese muziek is twintig jaar geleden ontstaan door het enthousiasme van Jan Jansen (huidig bestuurslid van de NVAS). Of was het de bijdrage van Javier Lopez Pinon? Openlucht theaterstukken in tal van West-Afrikaanse landen : Benin, Ivoorkust, Togo, Frans-Gyana, Zuid-Afrika, maar ook Amsterdam, Haarlem en Groningen (zie: http://www.javierlopezpinon.com). Dan wel Feri de Geus, choreograaf en antropoloog? Oprichter van Le Grand Cru (https://legrandcru-dance.nl/). Hiphop dansers in Senegal. Trainingsprogramma’s. Ongelooflijk veelzijdig. Dan wel het enthousiaste optreden van Stichting Helden, jongeren uit Amsterdam Zuidoost, met choreografie van Trisha Agia (http://www.nederlandvolhelden.nl/team)? Wat bleef vooral hangen? Waardering is zo persoonlijk, maar voor mij waren het: Elaine da Silva en Bright Omansa Richards.
Elaine da Silva, geboren en opgegroeid in Zweden, en Kaapverdiaanse roots. Ook in Californie gewoond en nu in Nederland. Schrijft haar nummers zelf. Voor mij als oppervlakkige kenner van West-Afrikaanse muziek zijn de vertolkers van Kaapverdiaanse muziek Cesaria Evora en Lura Criola. Maar nu ook Elaine da Silva. Op haar album vaak begeleid door een band. Dit keer alleen begeleid door een gitarist speelde ze van haar laatste album Nos Voz (Onze Stem) uit 2018 ‘Storia d’Vida’ (zie ook de prachtige video op You Tube). En ook (meen ik) ‘Mama Africa’ ( debuutsingle, ook op You Tube). En het bekende nummer ‘Yamore’ van Salif Keita en Cesaria Evora (ook fraaie video op You tube): ’Olhar de nos crianza ta a tornar brilhar de inocenca’. Een blik op lyricstranslate.com leert mij trouwens dat een Portugese ‘vertaling’ nogal kan verschillen van het Kaapverdiaans. Paulo Bouwman was de gitarist. Geboren in Portugal, opgeleid op het conservatorium in Rotterdam en bekende gitarist in de Kaapverdiaanse gemeenschap. Begeleider van talloze artiesten. Waaronder Lura. Hij vertelde over zijn manier van gitaarspelen als begeleider. Juist met nylon snaren spelen past bij de Kaapverdiaanse muziekstijl. Krijgt ook inspiratie als hij met lokale gitaristen in de DRC speelt. Hopelijk gaat het duo de komende tijd meer op tournee.
En vooral Bright Omansa Richards maakte bij mij indruk. Een geweldige podium-artiest die een zaal al snel mee krijgt in zijn enthousiasme, maar ook een zaal stil krijgt als hij zijn persoonlijke verhaal vertelt. Hoe hij in 1993 er in slaagde uit het door burgeroorlog verscheurde Liberia te vluchten. Geboren in 1969. Op jonge leeftijd al actief als maatschappelijk bewuste theatermaker in Liberia. Pakte deze draad weer op zodra hij in Nederland in een AZC terechtkwam. Verhalenverteller, acteur in films, toneelspeler. Vooral maakte hij indruk met zijn produktie ‘ As I Left My Father’s House’ . En oprichter van zijn eigen stichting New Dutch Connection (https://www.newdutchconnections.nl/), gericht op trainingen aan vluchtelingen, gecombineerd met stageplekken en leerbanen bij grote bedrijven.
Dus een bijzondere middag, gevolgd door een heerlijk Ethiopische maaltijd (verzorgd door Mw. Alem Mnaye, tel. 06 85012751) en toespraak voor Marieke door NVAS-voorzitter Felix Ameka.

On the occasion of the NVAS Africa Day 2019 on 16 March in Utrecht, the ASCL Library has compiled a web dossier about “Performing arts in West Africa”. It focuses on theatre, dance and hiphop in West Africa. The web dossier contains titles from the ASCL Library catalogue published from 2010, and a list of written plays from West Africa which are part of the ASCL Library’s extensive literature collection. The introduction is by Javier López Piñón, stage director.
Afrikadag 2019 staat volledig in het teken van de Afrikaanse podiumkunsten, met presentaties en optredens over Afrikaanse dans, toneel en muziek in de middag, en een prachtige dansvoorstelling in de Utrechtse stadsschouwburg.
In december is het boek Education for Life in Africa uitgekomen in de serie Occasional Publications van het Afrika-Studiecentrum Leiden. De bundel staat onder redactie van NVAS-bestuursleden Anneke Breedveld en Jan Jansen, en bevat zestien bijdragen in bijna driehonderd pagina’s. De bijdragen zijn gebaseerd op papers die gepresenteerd zijn op het NVAS-lustrumcongres Education for Life in Africa, mei 2017 in Den Haag.
De bundel is als pdf gratis te lezen via de website van het ASC Leiden of als hard copy te koop met 5 euro ledenkorting. Stort 10 euro (of een veelvoud hiervan als u meerdere exemplaren wenst) op bankrekening NL08 INGB 0007 8190 46 t.n.v. NVAS Leiden, onder vermelding van naam en volledig adres.
Aan de tweede NVAS-Pubquiz op 28 maart j.l. deden drie teams mee: twee teams kwamen om te winnen. Het derde team werd ter plaatse samengesteld uit de overige deelnemers en bestond grotendeels uit mensen die zich op de speelavond aanmeldden als nieuw NVAS-lid. De twee ambitieuze teams waren de nummers één en twee van de eerste pubquiz; team drie blonk uit door zeer grote diversiteit. De prijs waarom werd gestreden was een (in Mali gemaakte) mand met boeken, kleding (uit Ghana), mango-confiture (uit Guinée) en twee vrijkaartjes voor de FMS Afrikadag 2018 op 14 april aanstaande in Amsterdam.
De stemming was gezellig in De Eeuwige Student, vlak naast het Pieter de la Court-gebouw, maar ook was de concentratie optimaal. Continue reading →
