My name is Azeb Amha, I live in Leiden and work at the African Studies Centre of Leiden University. I did my BA and MA studies in linguistics at Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia, which is my country of origin. I obtained my PhD degree in linguistics from Leiden University in 2001, based on a study of the grammar of Maale, a language spoken in South-West Ethiopia. Since then, I am engaged in research and audio-visual documentation of linguistic and cultural heritage of the Oyda, Zargulla and Wolaitta peoples in Ethiopia. This involves a.o. recording, transcription, analyses and archiving of discourse and social activities related to customs of farming, house construction, production and usage of tools, as well as rituals and worldview related to such cultural practices. My work also involves teaching (with courses and lectures given at various times on morphology, syntax, linguistic anthropology, language skills in Amharic, research methodology, language policy, language and power), thesis supervision and editorial work (I am co-editor of the Journal of African languages and Linguistics (JALL) since 2005). Between 2009 and 2016 I served as programme coordinator and study adviser for the Research Masters in African Studies at Leiden University.
Mijn naam is Azeb Amha. Ik woon in Leiden en werk op het Afrika-Studiecentrum van de Universiteit Leiden. Ik heb mijn BA and MA in linguïstiek behaald aan de Universiteit van Addis Ababa in Ethiopië, mijn land van origine. In 2001 behaalde ik mijn doctoraat in de linguïstiek aan de Universiteit Leiden, gebaseerd op een studie van de grammatica van het Maale, een taal gesproken in Zuid-West Ethiopië. Momenteel ben ik bezig met onderzoek en audio-visuele documentatie van taalkundig en cultureel erfgoed van de Oyda, Zargulla and Wolaitta-volken in Ethiopië. Dit houdt o.a. in opnames maken en rubriceren, sociale en discursieve praktijken analyseren rond landbouw, huizenbouw, productie en gebruik van gereedschappen en ook van ritueel en worldview die daarmee samenhangen.Mijn werk omvat verder het geven van onderwijs (over morfologie, syntax, linguistische antropologie, taalvaardigheid Amhaars, onderzoeksmethodologie, taalpolitiek, taal en macht), these-begeleiding en redactiewerk (Ik ben sinds 2005 co-redacteur van het Journal of African Languages and Linguistics (JALL)). Van 2009 tot 2016 was ik programmacoördinator en studieadviseur van het Research Masters in African Studies-programma aan de Leidse Universiteit.
